Love Thy Neighbor: A Forgotten Commandment in a Broken World
Picture
In today’s world, governments and institutions often treat people as mere numbers on a chart — statistics to be managed and not cherished. Policies are made and budgets are balanced, yet behind every data point is a living, breathing human being — a spirit created in the image of God. Many are suffering in silence: families go without adequate food, individuals sleep without shelter, and countless others struggle to find even the simplest comfort of decent clothing.

But the most heartbreaking truth is that this suffering continues not just because of governmental failure, but because many of God’s own people have turned and walked the other away. The body of Christ, which was meant to be a beacon of love and compassion, has in many ways grown numb to the cries of the hurting. The Apostle James reminds us that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:17).

Jesus made it plain that the second greatest commandment, after loving God, is to “love thy neighbor as thyself” — found in Matthew 22:39 and Mark 12:31. This command is not a suggestion; it is the foundation of what it means to live out the Gospel. To love one’s neighbor is to see the divine worth in every person, to respond to injustice with action, and to meet need with compassion.

So, the question must be asked — where do you stand when it comes to injustice? When you see hunger, poverty, or oppression, do you turn your head the other way, or do you step forward in love? To love your neighbor as yourself means to feel their pain as your own, to extend grace where the world offers none, and to become the hands and feet of Christ in a world desperate for His touch.
